Stir Bakery - About us

Made in the heart of Cambridge, 7 days a week

Our bakery has been at the heart of Cambridge since 2017 – supplying all six of our cafés, Marvins and our local communities.

How it started

When Judith and Matt Harrison first opened Stir on Chesterton Road in 2015, they had a clear vision: a proper neighbourhood coffee shop for the CB4 community that had nothing quite like it. What they didn’t plan for was how hard it would be to find a bread and pastry supplier that met the standards Stir had set.

So, in April 2017, when the unit next door became free, they took it. That’s how Stir Bakery was born, as a straightforward answer to a problem, because if you want something done properly, sometimes you have to do it yourself.

“We felt there was a gap in the Cambridge market for a bakery where amazing bread was being handmade by artisanal bakers, using the finest, quality natural ingredients” - Matt Harrison, Co-Founder

What started as a small shop supplying the café next door has grown into something much bigger. Today, we're lucky to have a brilliant Stir Bakery team of over 25 skilled artisan bakers, pastry chefs and cake makers.

The craft behind it

Our award-winning sourdough uses just four ingredients: flour, salt, water and a starter we’ve been lovingly feeding since 2017. Nothing else.

Based in our production site near Cambridge North Station, our bakers use a slow fermentation process that gives each loaf a greater depth of flavour and its signature crust. Thanks to this process, our bread stays fresher for longer, tastes great and is genuinely better for you.

That same care and love for the craft carries through everything we make, from our white and wholemeal sourdough and seeded ancient grain to our pastries and gluten free range. Plus we're always experimenting and adding new items, so keep your eye out for our seasonal loaves and special bakes!

Our work has been recognised too, winning Speciality Bread Product of the Year, Britain’s Best Loaf, and being named as one of the top ten artisan bakeries in the UK. Whilst we're proud of all of these, we'd probably say we’re more proud yet of our weekend queues.
